My Training:
Met my dance angel in 1944 who treated me to my first tap class. After 7 crazy-wonderful years of dancing at the Lillian Jasper Studio in McKeesport PA, I relocated to NYC where I studied jazz with Matt Mattox and Peter Gennaro. Paid my rent with part-time jobs (selling hot dogs and donuts in Times Square and ushering at movie theatres that netted me $35 a week). After being cast as "Snowboy" in "West Side Story" I was making the spectacular salary of $165 a week. In 1957, broadway minimum was $85 a week. On the job, I was given two choices by Jerome Robbins. Take ballet classes or go back to McKeesport. I picked ballet. -
Special Skills:
I paid attention to the pros around me (Chita Rivera, Carol Lawrence, and Larry Kert) and watched how they worked the biz. I got an agent. By 1965, I lucked into working with legendary choreos like Michael Kidd, Jack Cole, Agnes de Mille, Herbert Ross, Tony Charmoli, Joe Layton, Onna White, Gillian Lynne, and Gene Kelly. Acting assignments came my way. While playing a British dandy in 'Half A Sixpence' every night, I was playing a dope dealer on a daytime soap by day (Secret Storm). By 1967, I was experiencing a full-out performing career in films that took me from New York to Hollywood, London, and Paris. In 1968, I started looking at options on the other side of the camera. A year later, my choreography for a rock musical on Broadway ("Billy") earned me a Drama Desk Award and a first Tony nomination. "Seesaw" "Rachel Lily Rosenbloom" and "Molly" followed and led to my first directing gig with a Bway smash that ran 5 years ("The Magic Show"). 1973 was a very good year for me...a Tony nod for directing and a marriage to dancer/actress Anita Morris that led to parenthood in 1978. My son James Badge Dale recently starred in the award-winning mini-series "The Pacific" and the Oscar-winning film 'The Departed.' During the 80's, my family relocated to LA and pursued more TV and film assignments. By 1990 I felt the urge to give back...and launched "Dance & Fitness Magazine"...often referred to as my "ruthless guide to dance employment." In 1999, it morphed into Answers4dancers. Today, I can honestly say working with my A4D family is the most rewarding job I've ever had. The next generation of working pros is so amazing! -
